I finally got that gym membership! It didn’t happen Monday as planned, but I finally made it there on Friday and kicked off a four-week circuit training plan and did some hill training on the elliptical. I haven’t been to a gym (outside of hotel gyms while traveling) since back when I lived in the North End and there was still a Planet Fitness in Government Center – maybe six or seven years now? All of the training that I’ve done in the last year and a half has been at home, running or at yoga. But after last August’s Spartan race, I know that I’m going to need to push myself a lot harder in order to be better prepared for my first Spartan of the season on June 4th. To the extent that I even thought about going to Home Depot and buying a bucket and a fifty-pound bag of gravel to fill it to carry up and down my street… Spartans are not normal people.

I might have gone a little overboard last week, but let’s just say I killed it. Five workouts including two hot yoga classes, upper body + core, kettlebells and a two-hour yoga workshop! So much yoga! As I mentioned in last week’s recap, I was feeling pretty humbled and disappointed with my practice on Sunday. Stuff like that used to send me spiraling, but instead, I went home and signed up for a super challenging class on Friday… Then one on Wednesday… And then the workshop on Sunday to round out the week. I’m still humbled by the areas in which I can improve, but more than anything I feel inspired to get back to a regular yoga practice to help me balance out my other training goals.

When my friend, Jen forwarded me an email for a free barre class, I debated over wanting to go. I’ve heard about barre for a while, and I’ve only avoided it to this point because I hate obsessive fitness trends. I’m also a savage who prefers her kettlebells – that’s just how I roll. I eventually said “yes” if for no other reason than Jen is always down to run races with me, and so I didn’t want to leave her hanging.

This week I managed another four workouts even after skipping Wednesday and Thursday in the middle of the week. I did leg day plus core, added in a resistance tubes workout, took my first barre class and finished the week strong with a hot yoga class. Barre and yoga required early mornings on both Saturday and Sunday, and I’m feeling really good about my committing myself to that effort – mornings can be pretty tough for me. Yoga was not my best practice, and I’m looking forward to making getting back to class 1-2 times a week a priority moving forward.

When I took my first dose of Methotrexate last May, I never imagined that I would still be on it nine months later. In my mind it would be a very temporary fix – a means to an end to get my flaring RA under control. But then, as these things tend to happen, my body responded positively to the combination of both Methotrexate and Orencia and the exit plan got a little more complicated.
